Biography

Shireen is a recent graduate of UC Berkeley with a degree in Political Science and Peace and Conflict Studies. She moved from Tehran to California at the age of twelve and was determined to pursue a career advocating for individuals’ fundamental human rights. During her studies at UC Berkeley, she served as a research assistant for the Political Science Department as well as the Human Rights Center of UC Berkeley School of Law. Shireen was active in the Iranian Student Cultural Organization and was a writer for the UC Berkeley Iranian-American publication, Perspective magazine. The summer after graduating, she interned in D.C. for the progressive think tank, Center for American Progress. She worked as a Sudan/South Sudan Policy intern for the Enough Project, a genocide prevention non-profit within CAP. Afterwards, Shireen traveled to Bangkok, Thailand to study abroad an extra semester at Thammasat University where she also interned at the human rights organization, Boat People SOS, researching violations on Vietnamese refugees. She made regular visits to the Bangkok Immigration Detention Center to provide food, basic services, and emotional support to detained asylum seekers and refugees. Following the termination of her semester, Shireen went backpacking solo to over ten countries in Southeast and Northeast Asia. In between her travels, Shireen decided to join her Afghan American friend on a volunteer trip to the island of Lesvos, Greece, to act as a translator for Afghan and Iranian refugees. In the span of the three weeks, they translated for thousands of refugee families in the medical clinic, distributed clothes, and aided in various other areas of camp life. Shireen currently volunteers part time at the IAWF office while pursuing a job opportunity in human rights advocacy and humanitarian aid.
