Biography

Shadee Abdi, Ph.D., is an Assistant Professor of Communication in the College of Integrative Sciences and Arts at Arizona State University. She obtained her Ph.D. from the University of Denver and both her B.A. and M.A. from California State University – Long Beach, all in Communication Studies. Dr. Abdi is a critical cultural scholar who emphasizes performance studies, gender and sexuality studies, media studies, and performances of Iranian diaspora. Broadly, her work explores how conflicting discourses complicate and enhance our intersectional understandings of identity and power relative to race, culture, sexuality, gender, nationality, religion, ability, class, and family. She is particularly interested in how narratives are used to simultaneously resist and reinforce normative performances of these intersections within familial and mediated contexts. Her work has been featured in The Journal of International and Intercultural Communication, Critical Studies in Media Communication, The Journal of Intercultural Communication Research, and Liminalities: A Journal of Performance Studies.
