Born in Tehran in 1965, Ms. Arefkia was raised by her grandparents after her parents divorced when she was two. Prompted by the revolution, her family fled the country and bounced between France, Spain, and the United States. By the age of 20 Ms. Arefkia found herself alone, having lost all of her loved ones within a couple of years, including her mother. Facing these tragedies amidst drug addiction, 8 years of homelessness, divorce, and motherhood, Ms. Arefkia is a survivor on the path to recovery and rehabilitation.
